Thanks for posting Klaus and reminding us. I am so used now to getting weather, auto flight plan filing, aircraft avoidance and everything off my GPS, that I tend to forget things like this. When I start seasonal flying upstate again, that stuff doesn't matter, but down here in the congestion it sure does.

I created an account and started learning the website. There's a lot of information. It will take a while to learn it all.

First place you'll go once the account is created is the "Pilot Dashboard" then in small blue type click "Edit Favorites". Enter the tree airports that you fly to then change the four weather maps.

The Alaska FAA is doing a survey asking for reviews. Pilot's in Alaska have been scammed by the FAA so many times in so many different ways they're always trying to read between the lines.

This is the two back-to-back emails from the Aviation Services Chief Architect:

Subject: Invitation - Alaska-Specific Flight Service Focus Group
Hi everybody,

I’m currently conducting an online focus group for Flight Service. That group was composed through invitations to the most frequent users of our website (a few probably on this distribution) and we’ve done a couple rounds of topics and associated surveys - I send out a PDF with concepts/ideas, then use a SurveyMonkey survey to gather structured and free-form input from participants. Incidentally, we reopened the invitation to that group due to the DUATS termination – so if there is interest, look at the News and Announcements on the home page for and you’ll see a link where you can volunteer to participate. Upcoming topics on that survey include maps & briefings and a mobile version of website.

However, one of the things that has become apparent to me from that survey is that targeted discussion/inputs specific to Alaska and Hawaii would be very valuable due to the unique characteristics of those regions. So I’ve decided to create 2 new groups specific to those areas.

You are included on this email because either the home base for an aircraft in your profile is an Alaska airport, OR your area code is 907. I do realize 907 is not a guarantee you’re still in Alaska, but those were the best filters I could use. A few of you also were in the system with 2 email addresses. Since I can’t tell which one you most regularly use, I kept both in the list – so apologies for duplicate invites.

If you would like to participate in an Alaska-specific focus group, please use the link below to let me know. One of the topics I know I’d like to address is weather information specific to Alaska – but you can also suggest additional topics in the link.

I’ll keep the invitation open approximately 1 week and follow up with the group shortly thereafter. I hope a good number of you decide to participate and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Based on a couple of the comments that came back, I should clarify…

Our interest in getting your feedback is strictly related to our online/web services. With the impending decommission of DUATS, will be the only FAA’s only free Flight Service website, and clearly we need to make sure it meets your needs.

I’m not aware of any plan to privatize Alaska flight service and this focus group activity should not be construed in any way to suggest, imply, hint, etc. that something is changing in that regard, nor is there any intent on our part to impact, change, reduce etc. what your FAA Alaska Flight Service team does for you.
