Secret Pilot Words

Unread postby KeithSmith » Thu Apr 20, 2017 8:55 pm

I wish I could remember where I read it, but I came across an article that purported to explain "secret pilot words" and what they meant. Little did I know that I was part of a secret society, but I actually knew every secret the article discussed. However, there was one factoid mentioned that was new to me and I hadn't really thought about before. That was the word "ramp".

The article explained that in the early days of flying that the large seaplanes would either be on the water or "on the ramp". After hearing that, it all made perfect sense. All these years I've just been using the word "ramp" and never associating it with watercraft.

Just to round out that piece of trivia, the word "tarmac" is a shortened version of "tarmacadam", which is a paving materiel. It's commonly imprecisely used to mean the "ramp" or airport apron.

The think Glenn meant, the most Famous last words of a bold pilot. I am old enough to remember Scheduled seaplane flights on PanAm and the transition from water to land going up the "Ramp" and remember when Tarmac was used for any macadam paved road, side walk etc. I think all these terms predate aviation, including the Watch This!
