Not just politicians. There are fake profiles everywhere and they all can be trained to like certain pages.
I just rendered co- administrator status on a Facebook page, which grew through less than honest ways.
Most reach on Facebook is paid and non organic. But, non organic growth is fake and if an association uses money on its social media channels, I claim that they are misusing membership dues. Its miserable stuff and members financing it have nobody else to blame.
Over the last 6 years I have spent exactly $20.00 of this forums money on an ad campaign. Never again. I can't very well be asking people to donate to this forum and then use the funds on the worlds most powerful, but also most stupid social network. Its for presence. Whoever sees or reads it, fine.
Facebook Fans are completely and utterly useless for any website, unless sales are generated directly through the page.
There is a multitude of ways to artificially inflate your fan count on Facebook. Unfortunately, some do it this way.
Right now our forum has been on Facebook for 7 years and it has collected 340 likes,
none of which are purchased.
I barely do anything on either of the Facebook pages in terms of promotions. Everything you see is completely organic.
Every new article on
http://www.seaplanemagazine.com is shared on Facebook and Twitter, but that's on Autopilot and pretty much it.

I do mention sponsors on these pages and/or use them to help boost the reach of advocacy topics or magazine articles.
SPA has got some very impressive numbers to show. More than 4000 members on its forum, 13K Fans on Facebook, probably close to 10K dues paying members, increasing by healthy chunks everyday. I am sure life is rosy and good in good old Lakeland and Winterhaven. Its always been good.
