New engine io-550 F or N

Unread postby Mikey » Wed Nov 18, 2015 1:33 pm

Hi all.
Talking about upgrading my Cessna 206 10-520 to the io-550.
Who has done it, did you do the F model or the N model?
Did you notice the performance gains etc.
Would you do it again.
Any and all info helpful.

Yes, the commercial operators here in Juneau have removed all the IO-550-F models. There's no comparison in reliability and performance between any other engine and the IO-550-N. They say the -N is 310 horsepower but you'll think it's a lot more.

I think the -F models should be discontinued. The cylinders wearing out or cracking on floatplanes is common place, especially amphibs.

I'm not sure what the difference is, but I upgraded this past summer on my 182 and went from an O520 to an IO550D (airplains). Engine was also ported and polished. I noticed a significant improvement in take off and climb and have no regrets whatsoevever.
