Bolt/hardware protection.

Unread postby Mikey » Mon Mar 07, 2016 3:36 am

Hi what are we all using for bolt/ hardware protection on all the bits and bobs on our floats.
Undercoat then topcoat on nuts and bolts , or a heavy layer of grease?
Parakotre (or however you spell it).
What's best for salt water, insert bolt well greased then cover head/nut?

What do we all do- remember I'm talking salt water and that's nasty stuff.

Thanks
Mike

I know one of the biggest operators on east coast uses EVERYTHING! Corrosion X. DCF50, and peralketone ( or however you spell it. They use lots of it ....and rinse rinse rinse. Don't forget seat rails , seat mechanisms hell if you can figure out how to get it in the radios without wrecking them. You wouldn't believe where that salt will get. They operated all weather climates. Warm saltwater is the worst. Carpets and seat fabrics headliners hold it in. Don't hesitate to call big operators and ask if you catch them when they're not too busy you'll get all their tricks

For the bolts holding the float blocks to the floats I used a synthetic grease, pulled everything apart every couple of years & covered the bolt shafts with the synthetic grease.Regular maintenance was squirt acf50 on everything after every flight.Worked very well here on the west coast.

There is one little secret mix that few seaplane folks know about.

Take a pint jar, a one inch paint brush. Paint a mix of 50 percent red lithium grease, 15 percent corrosion X or ACF-50 and STP oil treatment on everything that might corrode.

The STP is the stickiest product you'll ever come across...
