DPE Renewal Requirements Changed

The DPE community was surprised last week by an FAA interpretation of how much flight time would be required to renew their authorization to act as a DPE. At first the FAA said they would need 300 hours of PIC time in the last 12 months. They went on to say that it had always been that way and they were just making the requirement known. Then, before the ink was even dry on the first message the FAA said that the requirement would be 60 hours of PIC time in the last 12 months.

That might sound reasonable at first, but when you study it closer, you can see a lot of potential problems. There is no telling what long term impact this change will have, but I foresee a shift towards far younger less experienced DPEs. Only time will tell.
