An Indonesian air force C-130 transport plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Medan, Indonesia, shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, with more than 100 people on board, including military personnel, their families, and 12 crew. No survivors have been confirmed. Images from the site show a mangled and charred wreckage, a burning car and a shattered building. Smoke billowed and crowds gathered nearby. Officials said the aircraft had taken off from Jakarta, the capital city, and made two stops before arriving at Medan. The military was trying to determine how many people got off or boarded the plane at each of those stops.

The airplane, which had been in service since 1964, had taken off from the Soewondo air force base just before noon. An air force official said less than two minutes later, the pilot told the controller the plane had engine trouble and would be returning to the airport. The airplane was turning right to attempt that return when it crashed. A local resident told reporters he saw the airplane flying very low, with flames and black smoke coming from it. Some reports said bystanders and first responders had rescued some survivors from the crash site and taken them to a hospital, but it's not clear if those were people on the ground or in the airplane. So far those reports are unconfirmed. The buildings where it hit reportedly housed a hotel and massage parlor.
