On Saturday afternoon (01-24-16), one of the pilings supporting Sitka’s floatplane facility crumbled. The main float began to drift outwards and stretch a power line along with it. A caller notified the Sitka Police Department at 1:35 p.m.
The Electric Department briefly shut off power and water to the area until the broken portion of the dock was secured.
Harbor Master Stan Eliason says the floatplane facility is 54-years old and that the endpiece of the dock is unrepairable. He adds that the Harbors Department is reviewing underwater video of the remaining infrastructure to determine further action.
