Float plane rescues woman caught in Point Woronzof current

Two people on a float plane helped rescue a woman struggling in the waters off Point Woronzof Monday evening, Anchorage Fire Department Assistant Chief Erich Scheunemann said.

Someone called 911 at 7:30 p.m. to report the victim about 100 feet offshore, Scheunemann said in a phone interview. He said the caller told AFD the victim appeared to be fighting a current and was moving away from shore.

AFD crews responded, but before they reached the water, a float plane had landed and brought her to shore, Scheunemann said. A citizen assistance request had been pushed out on aviation and marine channels, and the plane’s pilot responded by landing, a statement from AFD said.

The victim’s condition was not immediately available. Scheunemann said the woman was alive when AFD took her to a nearby hospital, where she was evaluated.

“An amazing effort from civilian aircraft, civilian boats and our partners at the airport and with APD,” AFD Battalion Chief James Dennis told KTVA. “It was an amazing rescue effort on everyone’s part and it looks like we have a save out of the inlet.”

I tried a few times to rescue ladies on beaches, but they had cell phones and called the cops :anonymous:
