PK Floats Going Composite!

Levi was telling us all about them during our tour but they were at a different facility. Looking forward to seeing them at Greenville. I was very impressed with their products

How big is the "market" likely to be? I would have thought that retrofitting an existing float plane with new floats and throwing away or selling off the old floats would be more work or trouble than most people would want to do. Don't people go to extraordinary lengths to "get by" with what they have and just repair them as necessary?

By the same token, converting an aircraft that has never been on floats before would seem to be a very small percentage of the potential market too. What does that leave - trying to become the OEM provider of floats for new build aircraft intended for use as a float plane?

I agree with your thinking. My guess, they figured out how to do a lot of float building with very few people.

As Steve McCaughey noted in his speech during the Minnesota SPA Safety Meeting, Dollars flowing into the Seaplane Industry from the INTERNATIONAL market have well exceeded the money generated in the U.S.

Companies are well advised to continue investing into the future development of their products, as not everyone has reached the level of self-destructive ignorance we have reached in the U.S. The number of active seaplane pilots in the U.S. is dwindling for very specific and well known reasons and not only do we have the solutions to this problem, we actually actively refuse to acknowledge our shortfalls and failures.

Heck yes, go into composite floats, heck yes, invest in new ways to keep things going. They will sell.
They won't sell on Facebook, Twitter and definitely not through print advertising in the U.S. or elsewhere, but they will sell.

Although off topic, a number of years ago my assistant renewed one of my two domain names that was not due to renew and missed renewing the one that was. The day after it expired, it was used as a site for 9 porn sub-sites. I was offered the purchase of my domain name back for $10,000.00 and I declined. A month later the cost amount asked was reduced in half until 6 months in, they just wanted $1,000.00. I did not pay and on the day their use of it expired, I am sure they were better off spending $20 elsewhere and I got it back. Now have auto renewal.

A number of years ago I did a lot of research on Mead Floats as they looked pretty slick. At the time, there were few US airplanes that they were legal on, but a number of Canadian pilots used them. They were available (for a time), looked slick and not too expensive, but apparently they started taking deposits with no supply and eventually stopped answering the phone.

An established outfit like PK should be able to do much better, but no ones seems to want to spend a lot of money on the low end of the float market.

With the magazine we've reached out to all the various float manufacturers and had limited feedback from the smaller ones. PK had not sent anything for months whereas Wip & Aerocet have active marketing & news releases. Thats what it takes. Todays social media hype is of limited effectiveness as Facebook determines and uses smart algorythms to decide who sees your blurbs.
